EMA Sets Service Level Management Market at Nearly $1.4 Billion

SLM Market Expected to Grow by Almost 17% Annually

BOULDER, CO, April 3, 2006, Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), the leading independent IT research and consulting firm, just completed an industry market sizing report for the Service Level Management (SLM) sector. This comprehensive report estimates SLM market revenue of $1.375 billion in 2005, with projected growth during the next five years at nearly 17% annually.

According to the report, the definitions of SLM and Business Service Management (BSM) often vary and can range from low-level technology management, to functionality that only peripherally includes IT, such as Business Process Management (BPM). For the purposes of this study, the term SLM is used to represent both SLM and BSM. All known SLM and BSM solutions were included in the market size analysis.

With total 2005 SLM revenues at nearly $1.4 billion, the top five vendors contributed 58% of the total market. These vendors are BMC Software, Inc.; Computer Associates International, Inc.; Hewlett-Packard Company; International Business Machines Corporation; and, Mercury Interactive Corporation. Vendors in this category have more than $100 million in SLM revenues.

The report also found a notable gap between tier one and tier two SLM vendors, with not a single company earning $50 million to $100 million in SLM revenues. Nine vendors made up a distant second tier, with revenues between $20 million and $45 million, for a total of 18% of the market. Some tier two vendors include Compuware Corporation; InfoVista S.A.; and, Keynote Systems. The third tier group accounted for 17% of the market, with 20 vendors contributing between $5 million and $20 million in SLM revenues. The fourth tier includes 21 small vendors that make up 5% of the SLM market, with $2 million and $5 million of revenues each.

“This first ever SLM market-sizing report shows continued growth and just how much the larger players clearly dominate the top tier positions in the market,” said Rick Sturm, founder of EMA and the leading authority on the SLM market.
